[it's definitely one of the few points they can definitely agree on. this is a meal that hijiri is thoroughly enjoying—it appeals so completely to his taste in food and his desire to appreciate the best meals he can.
like the hipster he is.
even he can't deny that for all the interesting places he tries and how excellent many of them are... their current meal is a cut above the rest.
(and he's going to have to thank kashuu for this opportunity once they're through, much to his chagrin.)]
[but really despite his appreciation for the extravagant?]
A balanced meal is best. A grilled fish like mackerel, rice, miso soup and some manner of vegetable is the ideal. Ramen, tempura, and other heavier or not fully nutritious meals I'd rather eat in moderation, when necessary.
[obviously, he prefers to get those things from the top tier restaurants, but he stops for ramen in other places when he needs a quick lunch. it's just not ideal.]
Huh... So even a mega-foodie like you enjoys the good traditional stuff? It's a little surprising.
[Not even he's sure why?! His mental image of Hijiri led him to believe the guy might only eat caviar or something, based on the rumors going around. But no, that's a very down-to-earth answer...]
I guess it's hard to beat things like that, though.
Sometimes, it's the most simple foods that do the best job. While other foods are enjoyable and should be appreciated, there is no reason to shun a traditional meal.
[especially one when prepared with care.
for being a kid from the modern age, though, sometimes you really would think he fell out of the meiji era or something.]
Weeell, let's say I could take you to the place that hands-down has the best traditional meals you'll ever find anywhere ever, pretty much. But that place is, um... Kind of hard to get to. Exclusive, you know?
[The sad part is, that's not entirely untrue. He's just awful... at explaining things... In general, but especially when he's trying to be vague or covert at the same time.]
Baaasically I could get you some great food from two hundred years ago, is what I'm saying.
But the most important part is just to not change anything while you're back there, so as long as you don't go stealing stuff or telling people future secrets, it should be fine!
Hey! I don't interfere with the past. That'd be like, against my job description.
[And other various Ominous Things, blah blah, time travel. Time travel. It's complicated and he still doesn't understand much of it, but he at least knows it's safe enough to go back for a meal or to buy something cute, even though that is totally not what time travel is meant to be used for.
IT'S FINE.]
If you don't wanna come, I guess I can just bring something to you...

[HE COULD MAKE THIS SO MUCH EASIER FOR BOTH OF THEM BY JUST AGREEING but no. No, he's gotta scold first. Kashuu frowns, but he is Undeterred™ as usual, at least...]
Look, everything is fine here, right? You don't count since you're already mixed up in weird spirit stuff, but I don't talk to normal humans about this stuff, so it all turns out okay.

In an ideal alternate reality, maybe.]
You know, I really am curious about what your favorite flavors are.
[At least he waits until there's a break between courses...]
no subject
I'm not particular about specific flavors, though my preference is for that of something savory, yet mild. A clean flavor profile.
[he's.
such a hipster.]
Which is not to say I don't enjoy typical meals like ramen when they're handled properly. [he does, but he only wants The Best.]
no subject
Huh... So, what's the best thing you've had that you'd consider a typical meal?
[He's really curious about just how high-brow Hijiri's tastes are even among the more common foods...]

[This is going somewhere food-related, miraculously. But for now, Kashuu just throws that question out there without any real explanation...]
no subject
[so you might want to elaborate, kashuu.]
no subject
[THIS ISN'T GREAT ELABORATION.]
no subject
[what does that even mean, kashuu!]

I'm saying that it's so exclusive getting into it might be breaking a few rules. Probably not on your side of things, at least.
[And he breaks rules on his side all the time, as evidenced by his dumb ass being here.]

[in case kashuu was unaware of this.]
I'm not sure I'd be willing to comply with such a vague explanation.

[duh???? why are you like this, kashuu. so infuriating!!!
and yet.
he still doesn't seem to be refusing this interesting food? what a punk.]

[why is hijiri like this, we just don't know.]
no subject
Then I would've ditched, obviously! Or made up some story. I'm pretty good at those.
[Somehow?! He's better at making up bizarre half-truths than he is at explaining actual full truths...]
