[time to git gud in the kitchen, kashuu. get cookin'.
though either way—]
It's splendid. Not only is it tender, but the flavors are all perfectly balanced in a way that an amateur couldn't even hope to replicate. Even many professionals do not have a sense this good.
[Does anyone really want a sword cooking their food, though. Like, even one who knows how to cook.]
Right? I wish I could come eat this every day.
[It's not like he actually would, though. ...Because he can't afford it or keep calling in favors, mostly - not because he's actually worried about disturbing SpaceTime Itself™.]
It's the sort of meal that should not be taken lightly. It's meant to be savored and appreciated in ways that one couldn't on a constant basis without taking it for granted.
[as far as the hipster foodie is concerned, at least.]
[Fortunately, he's only partially using this as a springboard to get away from the near-remembrance of bad nicknames there... He's pretty interested in The Official Foodie's opinion here.]
[That definitely sounds like a very Hijiri place to live.]
Geez, you're not a very good conversationalist. Don't you know a good talk pairs with food like wine does?
[He's missing out on so much by being so stilted!!]
A-ny-way, I think salty things are nice! You look like the kinda guy who might like stuff that you could describe with words like "tart" or "savory", though.
[NEEDLESSLY SAVAGE!! He doesn't need any of his food to be seasoned, he can just supply his own bitterness.
But Kashuu at least kind of tries to be a little quiet after that... More or less... Yeah that lasts all of five seconds, until the next round is set out.]
There is nothing dull about focusing on the most important part of a meal that is of this caliber.
[it's not like he can't deal with banal conversation and small talk over a meal. he does it with his family and in business meeting plenty. but when it comes to a meal that is exceptional—
he cares only of tasting the food and complimenting the chef.
he's just fussy that way. either way, he's taking a piece of marinated otoro; he's dying internally at how perfect it is.]
Tender... complex. The texture is the best one could ask for, and with the flavors in the rice—it is not a simple flavor profile, despite how simple this should be.
BUT!! Kashuu will take a piece too, and it honestly really is so good that even he shuts up for a little bit. A miracle.]
Geez, it really is melt-in-your-mouth, huh? It's been a super long time since I've had something this nice.
[By no fault of the people who do the cooking in his life. They do their best... But man, nothing lives up to expertly-prepared sushi and sashimi of the finest grade.]
[it's definitely one of the few points they can definitely agree on. this is a meal that hijiri is thoroughly enjoying—it appeals so completely to his taste in food and his desire to appreciate the best meals he can.
like the hipster he is.
even he can't deny that for all the interesting places he tries and how excellent many of them are... their current meal is a cut above the rest.
(and he's going to have to thank kashuu for this opportunity once they're through, much to his chagrin.)]
[but really despite his appreciation for the extravagant?]
A balanced meal is best. A grilled fish like mackerel, rice, miso soup and some manner of vegetable is the ideal. Ramen, tempura, and other heavier or not fully nutritious meals I'd rather eat in moderation, when necessary.
[obviously, he prefers to get those things from the top tier restaurants, but he stops for ramen in other places when he needs a quick lunch. it's just not ideal.]
Huh... So even a mega-foodie like you enjoys the good traditional stuff? It's a little surprising.
[Not even he's sure why?! His mental image of Hijiri led him to believe the guy might only eat caviar or something, based on the rumors going around. But no, that's a very down-to-earth answer...]
I guess it's hard to beat things like that, though.
Sometimes, it's the most simple foods that do the best job. While other foods are enjoyable and should be appreciated, there is no reason to shun a traditional meal.
[especially one when prepared with care.
for being a kid from the modern age, though, sometimes you really would think he fell out of the meiji era or something.]

But even he can't stay irritated after taking the first bite, because really, one in and it's already all it's boasted to be...]
Ooh...! Wow, I don't think I've ever had fish this tender before! This is really perfect, isn't it?

If only we could be afforded that sort of luxury, though I imagine it would detract from what makes the flavors so valuable.
no subject
[This may or may not be because eating in general is still incredibly novel to him, though.]
But I guess I can kinda see what you mean...

Ah... This is totally where your nickname came from, isn't it?

[he's electing to not remember the hipster statement from earlier.]

...On second thought, it's probably best not to go there again.]
Nothing, nothing. So! What part's your favorite so far?
no subject
he's just lucky that hijiri is enough of a foodie to be interested in talking about it.]
I'll reserve my proper judgment for the end of the meal, but thus far... the marinated salmon roe.
[though he's expecting that the upcoming selections will be far more decadent.]
no subject
Good pick, good pick. I like that one a lot, too.
[Fortunately, he's only partially using this as a springboard to get away from the near-remembrance of bad nicknames there... He's pretty interested in The Official Foodie's opinion here.]
What kinda things do you usually like, anyway?
no subject
I don't believe that's of any concern to you.
[he likes hipster things like modern art and trendy food. he'd probably live in a tiny, overpriced apartment in a trendy neighborhood if he could.
it's okay, kashuu. he can be broken, it just takes work.]

[why does hijiri insist on being needlessly savage? we really just don't know at all.]
In any case, you're not incorrect. Using the appropriate words to describe the myriad flavors is necessary.
[what a pretentious little shit.]

In an ideal alternate reality, maybe.]
You know, I really am curious about what your favorite flavors are.
[At least he waits until there's a break between courses...]
no subject
I'm not particular about specific flavors, though my preference is for that of something savory, yet mild. A clean flavor profile.
[he's.
such a hipster.]
Which is not to say I don't enjoy typical meals like ramen when they're handled properly. [he does, but he only wants The Best.]
no subject
Huh... So, what's the best thing you've had that you'd consider a typical meal?
[He's really curious about just how high-brow Hijiri's tastes are even among the more common foods...]
